Kelcy Warren’s Role on the UT System Board of Regents
Governor Greg Abbott appointed Kelcy Warren to the University of Texas System Board of Regents, giving the Energy Transfer founder a hand in overseeing one of the largest public university systems in Texas. His term ran through 2025, according to a September 2024 Energy Transfer blog post about his career.
Regents set policy, approve budgets, and help steer the UT System’s campuses. For Warren, the role connects directly to his own education.
A UTA Graduate in Governance
Warren graduated from the University of Texas at Arlington in 1978, one of the campuses within the system. Kelcy Warren has given back to that school for decades. In 2023 he donated $12 million, the largest single gift UTA has ever received, to support its resource and energy engineering program.
He spoke about what the school meant to him. “I am honored to give back to the institution that has played such a pivotal role in advancing my educational and professional journeys,” said Kelcy Warren.
Before that gift, he had made 10 donations to UTA totaling $4 million over 25 years. These included a graduate fellowship named for Syed Qasim, his former professor and mentor, as well as support for Texas Tier One research initiatives.
Other Boards and Honors
The regents seat is one of several public roles. Warren joined the Kennedy Center Board of Trustees in 2019 and serves on the board of the Woodall Rodgers Park Foundation. His $10 million gift in 2012 helped create Klyde Warren Park in Dallas, and he later added $20 million to expand it.
His industry standing is well documented. Kelcy Warren has been honored by Hart Energy, the Texas Oil & Gas Association, SMU Cox’s Maguire Energy Institute, and D CEO Magazine, and he received the Gas Processors Association’s Hanlon Award.
Kelcy Warren brought both business experience and a personal history with a UT campus to the board. His service on the board added a governance role to decades of financial support for Texas higher education. Refer to this article for related information.
