Justin Fulcher’s RingMD Sale and Return to the US
In 2018, Justin Fulcher sold RingMD to an undisclosed buyer and stayed on for roughly a year to guide the transition, a process that included moving the company’s headquarters from Singapore to Boston as its focus shifted toward new markets and a very different set of regulatory demands entirely.
Fulcher described the sale as an evolution rather than an ending. He said bringing in good partners was a way to take what RingMD had proven in Asia and grow that model internationally, rather than a decision to walk away from what he had spent nearly a decade building from scratch with his own hands.
A RELAUNCH WITH NEW TIMING
The telehealth company relaunched in the United States in 2019, and by early 2020 Fulcher was back in Charleston, South Carolina, the city he had left behind as a restless teenager year earlier. Within weeks, COVID-19 arrived and upended any plans for a slow, methodical American rollout that the team had originally mapped out for the year ahead.
Fulcher chose to offer a white labeled version of the platform for free to doctors, hospitals, and healthcare organizations around the world as the pandemic spread quickly across borders and continents alike. He later said the crisis compressed roughly a decade of expected telehealth adoption into a matter of months.
That same year, RingMD partnered with PROVision Partners International to bring telehealth access to the hotel and cruise industries, pricing coverage as low as two dollars per traveler per night, an unusual but fitting extension of the affordability principle that had guided Justin Fulcher since his early days in Jakarta years before.
Fulcher has said the return to Charleston felt less like coming home and more like starting a new chapter of the same underlying project he had begun years earlier on the other side of the world. The sale, the relocation, and the pandemic all landed within roughly two years, compressing what might have been a decade of gradual change into a single stretch of constant adjustment for the entire company.
