From Newell Brands to Implus Michael Polk’s Private Sector Pivot

Michael Polk spent the better part of two decades navigating the demands of large, publicly traded consumer goods companies. He held senior roles at Kraft Foods and Unilever before becoming CEO of Newell Brands, where he oversaw a significant expansion of the company’s scale and value. When he left that post in 2019, few expected him to resurface as the leader of a much smaller operation.

Yet in 2020, Michael Polk took over as CEO of Implus LLC, a portfolio company in the fitness accessories space, owned by Berkshire Partners. The company manages 16 brands with a global presence, but its size and private ownership structure represent a meaningful departure from the environments where Polk built his name. He has spoken openly about what drew him to this kind of role and what it has taught him.

A Different Kind of Accountability

Running a private company means answering to a different set of expectations. Without public shareholders or quarterly earnings calls, the focus shifts from managing perception to managing performance over a longer horizon. For Michael Polk Newell Brands, that structure allowed him to engage more directly with the company’s actual operations.

He describes the experience as bringing him closer to the work he enjoyed earlier in his career, particularly the brand-building and business development elements that often get delegated away as executives climb toward the top of large organizations. At Implus, those responsibilities sit right in front of him every day.

Leading in a Crisis

Polk joined Implus just as COVID-19 was reshaping global business conditions. Rather than retreat to a conservative posture, he used the disruption as an opportunity to transform the company’s operating model and reinforce its financial foundation. The experience reinforced a conviction he has carried across his career: that the best leaders engage most fully when conditions are most demanding. Michael Polk’s path from Newell Brands to Implus reflects that belief in action. Read this article for more information.
